Ten Elements of Journalism

Being a journalist is one of the hardest jobs in the world. It isn't as serious as being a doctor were you have to save lives, or being a lawyer where if you loose your case your client may be sued 100,000 dollars. However, being a journalist is not an easy job because there are so many elements that make up being a good journalist and being able to follow those elements is not an easy task. There are ten elements that every journalist should follow and if not your career could be in jeporady. However, one of the most important elements for me is for journalist to be able to tell the truth. Telling the truth can sometimes be hard for journalists because they may not always agree with the truth or want to tell the truth. For example look at broadcasting journalist Bryan Williams. One of the most well-known journalist in the world. However he told a lie that in 2003 when he was in Iraq, that when he was in a helicopter it was hit by a grenade, when in reality he was in a helicopter thirty minutes behind the one that was hit. This whole lie led him to have a six month suspension and then finally was released from his job. Telling the truth is really imporant in journalism because no matter how good of a journalist you are any lie that you tell will at one point in your career be revealed and could lead to ending your career entirely.

  1. Hey Maya, I totally agree with you about this entire topic, the way you wrote was extremely insightful and kept me interested the entire way through the post. I too think that being a journalist is a very difficult career choice and profession because people who are higher up in society want to build these walls and block people out and that is not okay because we have the first amendment standing our ground.
